New York's Hotel Pennsylvania, located in the heart of Manhattan, makes getting around town easy. You will find a range of effortless options to get you out and about. Here are some tips:
Subway: With the 1-2-3 line right across the street, practically anywhere in New York is just a few steps away. Trains run 24 hours 7 days a week. The cost is $2.25 for a single ride anywhere in the system, and transfers are free as long as you stay in the system and do not exit through a turnstile. You can get a subway map from any booth attendant or from the MTA (Metropolitan Transit Authority) website. You can also plan your route out in advance and get a customized map by clicking here.
Bus: MTA buses are another easy way to get around and cover a lot of ground. They also allow you to do some city sightseeing while you travel. You can see the full bus routes map by clicking here. A single ride costs $2.25.
Taxi: When your feet get tired or you are in a hurry, just flag down a cab anywhere in the city (available cabs will have an illuminated white light on the roof to identify them). The minimum fare is $2.50 and increases $.40 every fifth of a mile. There is also a surcharge of $1.00 Monday-Friday 4:00-8:00pm and a $.50 surcharge at night from 8:00pm-6:00am. All cabs accept cash, and many now accept credit cards, Check with the driver before you get in. A 15%-20% gratuity is customary.
Walking: To really experience the charm of New York, you need to walk around. And just steps from the doors of Hotel Pennsylvania are a variety of great New York City places to visit. Here are a couple of hints:
- The pace in New York is fast, and this includes the pace the locals walk the streets. If you are going to take your time and enjoy your surroundings (which we recommend), just be aware of those around you.
- When in a group, be sure to allow other foot traffic to flow around you.
- Obey all traffic signals. A "Don't Walk" sign means that cars have the right away. Cabs can travel quickly and you don't want to be crossing a street when they have a green light.
- Wear comfortable walking shoes! Walking really is the best way to enjoy the sights, sounds and energy of New York.
