Summertime Sports in the City

Jun 03rd 2014

Ready, set, play ball; summer sports season has arrived!

Whether you like to watch or join in the fun, summer in New York means baseball, surfing, volleyball, soccer, tennis and more.

The most popular sport by far is baseball, which is why our city is so passionate about our 2 MLB teams; the Yankees and the Mets. There are numerous opportunities for visitors to catch a ballgame throughout the season and experience one of the city’s favorite summer pastimes.

But it doesn’t end with baseball, just about every sport you can think of and more can be found in New York City. From professional Ping-Pong and yoga, to surfing and skateboarding, this city has it all.

Some of this summer’s major sporting events in the city include:
• Belmont Stakes – June 7, 2014
• World Championship Boxing: Cotto vs. Martinez –June 7, 2014
• WWE: Live – July 12, 2014
• US Tennis Open – August 25, 2014 –September 8, 2014
• MLB season: All summer long
• And more!

While Brazil may be the host city for the World Cup, soccer fans can cheer on their team from a number of sports bars in the city for the final match on July 13, 2014. Numerous bars across the city will be showing the championship soccer match and offering food and drink specials.

Are you more of a participator than an observer? Athletes visiting the city can take advantage of numerous public sports courts, just about any sport you can think of, you can do! That’s the great thing about New York, the options are endless. Here are just some of our favorite summertime sports you can take part in while visiting:

• Surfing at Rockaway Beach
• Scuba Diving
• Paddle Boarding
• Kayaking
• Fishing
• Volleyball
• Tennis
• Basketball
• Soccer
• Sailing
• Frisbee

End the summer with a slam-dunk or better yet a Grand Slam, with the return of the US Tennis Open. America’s biggest tennis match is held at the Billie Jean National Tennis Center where in the off-season, the courts are open to the public. From world class sporting events to tossing a Frisbee in Central Park, you won’t be hard pressed to find your ideal sports day in the city!
