See the Seals in The City

Feb 18th 2014

Every year during the winter tourists and New Yorkers alike go on the hunt to spot the beautiful creatures that take up residence in and around the city’s harbor – the seals. Viewing these mammals in the harbor was once unheard of but since their return in recent year the number of seals in the area is on the rise!

Going seal spotting during the winter months creates an outdoor experience one would not typically pair with the hustle and bustle of the city. In a city as big as New York, we often forget or don’t realize how much wildlife there is.

Bobbing in the water, the harbor seals spending their time in coastal oceanic waters are often spotted basking in the sun on rocks, beaches, and moorings. The best time of year to spot these glorious creatures is November through May when they migrate from the colder waters North of the city.

Seals aren’t the only sea creatures that can be spotted in the harbor, the number of whale and dolphin sightings has increased significantly in recent years and there are even aquatic mammal tours being offered in the area.

New York’s Hotel Pennsylvania guests staying between November and May can go on a winter wildlife adventure to see the seals bobbing their cute faces out of the water or sunning themselves on the rocks with the New York Water Taxi. The company offers a winter eco cruise that takes visitors in search of beloved mammals. For more information on the New York Water Taxi tour, visit
