New York Landmark: The Brooklyn Bridge

Oct 10th 2013

Walk, drive, bike, or blade – the choice is yours on the picture perfect Brooklyn Bridge!

A beloved New York icon and national historic landmark, the Brooklyn Bridge is a must see attraction! Connecting the two boroughs of Manhattan and Brooklyn, it stretches over the East River giving unprecedented views of the Manhattan shoreline.

With more than 120,000 vehicles, 4,000 pedestrians, and 3,100 cyclists crossing the bridge every day, it’s one of the most travelled bridges in the U.S. It’s also one of the oldest suspension bridges in the country at 130 years old.

The famous bridge has also played a part in several Hollywood blockbuster films including The Siege, The Dark Knight Rises, and The Avengers. And for those who are fans of Sex in the City, you might remember the scene in the first film where characters Miranda and Steve reunite in the center of the Bridge. It’s also where Spider-Man comes to Mary Jane’s rescue after the Green Goblin dangles her high above the east river.

Thanks in part to its numerous cameos in films the Brooklyn Bridge has become one of the most recognizable landmarks in the world and while the bridge may offer incredible views of the Manhattan skyline, the bridge itself is extremely photogenic.  Visitors can take a stroll across the bridge on the designated pedestrian walkway elevated above the traffic giving you unobstructed views.

Just be sure to remember, it’s further than it looks; the bridge walk is 1.3 miles so plan to give yourself approximately an hour each direction to take into account time for pictures and pedestrian traffic. For more information visit the NYC Government site at
