More famous than Lady Gaga, thought to be one of the most beautiful women in the world and an inspiration to millions; she’s Lady Liberty and she’s over a century old.
Standing 305 ft above the Hudson in the New York City harbor resides one of the most beloved icons in the world: the Statue of Liberty. The Torch bearing woman is more than just a monument, she symbolizes freedom to millions and has been welcoming immigrants to American soil for 127 years.
The Statue of Liberty was a gift to the United States from France in 1886 and represents Libertas, the Roman goddess of freedom. Lady Liberty also stands for the law and holds a tablet with the date of the American Declaration of Independence inscribed.
One million New Yorkers attended her unveiling on October 28th, 1886 and to this day the statue draws millions of visitors each year. After having to close her doors due to the affects of Hurricane Sandy, she is once again welcoming visitors.
To visit this iconic landmark visitors can book ferry tickets that will take you to the island. There is no charge for entrance to the Statue of Liberty National Monument, only the cost for the ferry service, which all visitors must use, as private boats are not permitted to dock. If you feel up for climbing the staircase to the crown however, you must purchase a special ticket, but book early as only a limited number of visitors are permitted each day!
