They say laughter is the best medicine so get a big dose while visiting the Big Apple! New York city has produced and nurtured some of the most widely recognized comedians in the world, and it’s given them some of their best material! So what better place could there possibly be to experience comedic performances live in person? The answer is none!

Comedians with New York City roots include: Jerry Seinfield, Howard Stern, Bill Hader, Joan Rivers, David Letterman, Kristen Wiig, Chris Rock, Stephen Colbert, Tina Fey, Jon Stewart and more. Also, lets not forget that the most famous sketch comedy show of all, Saturday Night Live, is filmed right here in the city!

So where can you get your laugh on in the city? Well, there are numerous places, but here are some favorites:

Gotham Comedy
Home to the Emmy nominated television series, “Last Comic Standing” and having hosted the industry’s best comedians including Dane Cook, Jerry Seinfield, Rosanne, Dave Chapelle, Lewis Black and more, it has become an institution in the comedy world. It’s also been the backdrop for shows and films such as Curb Your Enthusiasm.

Chicago City Limits at the Jan Hus Playhouse -
The name might say Chicago, but this is one of NYC’s longest running comedy revues. Not to mention it’s in the heart of the action making it the perfect place for a night out!

It’s where comics go to try out their new material. You never know who you might see taking the stage. Chris Rock, Jerry Seinfield, Dave Chappelle and more are known to drop by unannounced.

Upright Citizens Brigade –
Or UCB as locals like to call it, was started by SNL alum Amy Poehler and friends. It offers an intimate setting and is known to have top comedians drop by randomly to take the stage or just sit back and laugh as a spectator. Comedic favorites including Poehler’s former costar Tina Fey, Robin Williams, and more have performed in the past. Tickets are cheap, but make sure you get there early or reserve online, as it is a popular place.

Behind the unsuspecting French doors of this West Village locale is the city’s oldest cabaret theatre where stars including Woody Allen, Joan Rivers, Barbra Streisand and many more have tested their material. Downstairs in the piano bar, patrons can take center stage at their open mic sessions during the week.

Peoples Improv Theater –
Looking for quality comedy at a discount price? The Peoples Improv Theater offers comedic performances seven nights a week with cheap drinks and free shows.

And of course we can’t forget to mention the New York City Comedy Festival. More than 60 shows across the city in some of the most prestigious venues will bring some of the biggest names in the business to the city for one hilarious week.

The 2014 lineup has been announced and it’s a big one! Highlights will include the legendary Bill Cosby, Bill Maher, Hannibal Buress, Maria Bamford and 200 more of the country’s most recognized and emerging comedians.
