Can’t Miss Events in NYC This Summer

Jun 03rd 2013

Summer is an exciting time in New York, full of new events and the return of some old favorites. We’ve put together a list of activities that anyone visiting the city won’t want to miss.

Hong Kong Dragon Boat Carnival: June 21-23

Enjoy the Hong Kong Summer Spectacular, full of exciting cultural, culinary and shopping events. Without question, the star of the summer’s attractions is the Hong Kong Dragon Boat Carnival, an event that has hundreds of thousands of cheering spectators every year. Not only is it a great sporting event, but it’s also an amazing cultural celebration.

Shakespeare in the Park: May 28 - June 30, July 23 - August 18
A New York tradition for over 50 years, performing Shakespeare’s classics with extraordinary actors, as well as some more modern works. This year sees The Comedy of Errors starring Modern Family’s Jesse Tyler Ferguson and a new musical based on Love’s Labours Lost.

Nathan’s Famous Fourth of July Hot Dog Eating Contest: July 4

Nathan’s Famous is, itself, a New York institution, selling hot dogs in Coney Island since 1916. The Nathan’s Famous Fourth of July Hot Dog Eating Contest has been held every year since 1972 (although there are rumors that it dates back further than that), and now it’s hard to imagine the Fourth of July in New York without it. It’s a great spectator sport, and the perfect way to start a day at Coney Island. Be sure to get one of those Nathan’s hot dogs yourself!

Macy’s Fourth of July Fireworks®: July 4

Another New York Fourth of July tradition is Macy’s Fourth of July Fireworks. With a dazzling display in the skies and a star-studded lineup of musicians featuring Mariah Carey and Tim McGraw, this promises to be an event that you’ll remember.

Broadway in Bryant Park: every Thursday, July 11 – August 15

Thinking of seeing a Broadway show, but feel like sampling before you spend the big bucks? Broadway in Bryant Park is the perfect way to do it! Thursdays this summer will see the cast from Broadways biggest shows perform samples for free in Bryant Park, just a short walk from Hotel Pennsylvania!

Central Park Conservancy Film Festival: August 22 – August 26

This August, Central Park will be showing some classic (or modern classic) films outdoors, and trust us, you haven’t seen a movie until you’ve seen it in one of New York’s outdoor park showings. This year, for added fun, they’re letting people vote on the movie that will be shown. Each night offers up a genre, so cast your vote and then go check out the winning film!
